Dig 2021: #2 Breaking the soil

Today was a great start. After very detailed and fascinating induction, we were set to excavate.

Our fist area of excavation is round the West and North sides of the North entrance to The Hall of Clestrain.

Here we see the paved area, which covers stone steps that go down to the original floor level of the Hall. On the left is the exposed drain we found last year. This runs along the entire North facade of the building. The drain walls rest on huge sandstone slabs, which have a beautiful half round gutter carved in them. This gutter took the surface water round to the West gable, where a drain will have probably taken it down towards the shore.

We very much look forward to tomorrow’s excitements!

Andrew.
