Renowned historian Dr Rosalind Rawnsley to give two public talks in Orkney

The John Rae Society is delighted to welcome back to Orkney acclaimed historian Dr Rosalind Rawnsley. During her visit, Rosalind will give two public talks and take part in a special ceremony at John Rae’s graveside. You are warmly welcomed to join us in person or online.

FRANKLIN, RAE AND THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE – THE HISTORICAL BACKGROUND.

A fascinating examination of Arctic exploration before 1815. Featuring a short musical introduction by Gemma McGregor.

JOHN RAE AND SIR JOHN FRANKLIN

Tuesday 30 September, 7pm
King Street Halls, Kirkwall and ONLINE

A closer look at the relationship and later myths associated with these two famous arctic explorers. Featuring a musical introduction by Fionn McArthur, performing Farewell to Stromness.

Both talks will include refreshments and a raffle.

St Magnus Cathedral Kirkyard, Kirkwall

Everyone is welcome to gather at St Magnus Cathedral Kirkyard for a ceremony at John Rae’s grave. Led by a piper, the procession will conclude with a short oration and libation given by Rosalind.
